Bioleather refers to leather that has been tanned with biodegradable vegetable oil. Vegetable tanning is a natural and eco-friendly option that has been used to make leather for thousands of years. Nowadays, leather is tanned using water-soluble vegetable oil and tannins from trees. A dye paste made from biodegradable vegetable oil and tannins is rubbed into the hide by hand, and each hide is unique. For this reason, each bag is unique, too. The surface of the leather becomes covered with a patina that beautifully displays the marks and grooves of a well-worn bag. Scratches and grooves that occur from use can be evened out slightly by rubbing them with your fingertips. The natural oil in skin evens out the leather.
Bioleather is initially a little stiff, but it softens nicely with use. Bioleather is usually more expensive than chrome tanning, because the manufacturing process for vegetable-tanned leather is largely carried out by hand, and takes around two months. Vegetable-tanned leather is an eco-friendlier, more durable and higher-quality option, and it only improves with use. Its durability makes it good value for money, and it is also a classic that never goes out of style.
